If you are traveling to one of these countries, you should review export control requirements and regulations for international travel. These units also handle agreements for sharing of proprietary/confidential information, data use, material transfer, and other agreements with outside parties related to research that do not involve an exchange of funds. Fortunately, many funding opportunities now offer support for capacity-building, project management, and partnership development to address these issues. JPIs are European-based networks that pool national research efforts around specific themes such as climate change, antimicrobial resistance, or food security. These initiatives regularly announce funding opportunities for transnational collaborative research.

As a researcher, you must find funding agencies that support international collaboration, which means sifting through private and public sources. Large international donors can refer small grants to any amount below US $50,000 but a few small and medium-sized NGOs prefer to call grants between $1000 and $10,000 as small grants. We also conducted an Ask-Me-Anything session to address more candidate-specific questions closer to the application submission deadline. The recorded videos of these webinars have had about 1500 views while our website (where all the informative articles are housed) has a monthly viewership of over 1 lakh. The response of the community — applicants, prospective applicants, and mentors — to iGAP resources and events has reinforced its need. Systemic barriers to sustained academic participation in the activities of international science–policy organizations undermine equitable knowledge co-production — a collaborative multi-actor creation of knowledge.
Researchers conducted a seven-year formative evaluation of follow-up data on this attempt by the English Department of Health in the 1970s to influence and set the agenda for healthcare research. Recent 30+ research funding agencies that support international collaboration editorials on collaborative research have highlighted the importance of maintaining an active relationship between research and the policy and practice side 11. Most funding agencies offered services that facilitated the use of evidence-based knowledge in decision making.
UC BERKELEY PRINCIPLES OF INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT
They are strategic investments aimed at fostering partnerships, enhancing research outcomes, and bridging knowledge gaps. If you are a university researcher, an independent scientist, or part of a non-profit organization, understanding how to navigate and apply for these funding opportunities is essential for driving impactful, team-based research. The U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) promotes scientific relations between the U.S. and Israel by supporting collaborative research projects in a wide area of basic and applied scientific fields, for peaceful and non-profit purposes. This NEH-BSF collaborative research opportunity encourages more international collaboration in humanities research between American and Israeli scholars and helps reduce some of the current barriers to working internationally.
To address this gap, this paper examines the academic outcomes of CSC funding by analyzing bibliometric data from scholarly works published 2008–2022, retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database. We found that the number of CSC-funded publications significantly increased during this period, and CSC-funded scholars collaborated with substantially more foreign scholars since the program’s launch compared to other Chinese scholars and the global average. The prevalence of CSC-funded research in S&T fields may be synergistic with broader capacity building efforts, including by enhancing China’s research and development capabilities. Further examining the CSC-funded collaborative network, there is a marked rise in ties with Europe, although the USA remains a key partner. Overall, this study highlights the pivotal role of the CSC in internationalizing China’s research system, positioning the CSC as a model for policymakers who aim to leverage government funding to promote academic achievement through global collaborative research activities.
All agreements, whether binding or non-binding, must be signed by an authorized representative of the university. GEO provides many resources to help faculty and staff navigate international agreements at UC Berkeley. The landscape of funding opportunities is evolving to prioritize collaborative research like never before. Whether it’s solving global health crises, developing clean energy, or exploring artificial intelligence, impactful research today is rarely a solo effort. By tapping into the right funding opportunities, researchers can join forces across boundaries, share expertise, and amplify the reach and relevance of their work. The Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) is an institution through which a profound reforming effort is being undertaken in the field of research and innovation in Greece.
The Export Control can provide one-on-one consultations, trainings, and informational materials for campus, and can also host informational sessions for your department, lab, or group. The Berkeley International Office (BIO) has also developed a guide to intellectual property at UC Berkeley and in the United States for international graduate students. Supporting researchers’ engagement in international science–policy bodies
Some resources, like online portals, assisted in identifying and tracking funding opportunities (NHMRC). Three-day courses or a center for posting reviews allowed researchers to learn and share experiences (NIHR) and diffuse success stories, to share ideas and good practices with other grant applicants and practitioners (ARC, NSERC, CIHR and INSERM). Publishing lists of licensed innovations created opportunities for companies to carry out discovery research (INSERM).
There is a need to identify and discuss the challenges to integrating research into policy and into practice in a timely manner, and to enhance the integration of research findings into policy—at the macro, local and in practices at the micro levels. In order to bridge the gap in awareness, build confidence, and provide skill-sets to build a strong application, we have been creating resources and hosting events for prospective applicants. Through these events, we expose them to the perspectives of the funding agencies, selection/review committee members, and awardees.
