Alcohols acute effects on emotion recognition and empathy in heavy-drinking young adults Scientific Reports

Public health policies and social interventions that address the causes and consequences of these vulnerabilities can fundamentally reduce the burden of DUD. Notably, females have higher rates of self-harm, which may be linked to the fact that they are nearly twice as likely as males to suffer from depression 53. According to psychiatric epidemiological survey reports, females tend to focus more on their emotions than males 54, which may explain the higher risk of depression among females. Additionally, we found that males have higher DALYs and mortality rates due to self-harm than females, indicating that they are more likely to choose fatal methods of self-harm when facing mental health issues.

We employed the Das Gupta method for decomposition analysis, using algebraic methods to isolate the standardized impact of each factor, and summarizing the influence of various factors on the observed changes. In this study, we investigate the relationship between SDI and incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rates attributable to AUD, DUD, interpersonal violence, and self-harm separately. It was initially reported that women are less likely to engage in binge drinking patterns than men (Bobrova et al., 2010). However, in the recent years, data from the United States indicate that the binge-drinking rate in adult women (age 21–49 years) has been rising (Hasin et al., 2019; Sarah and Keyes, 2020). Evidence suggests that there is a little convergence in the pattern of binge drinking in men and women.

In this context, alcohol is said to be the credible factor leading to emotional loss and instability and eventually leading to expressive-based murders. A national study of 16,698 inmates found that alcohol had a stronger role in violent offending such as homicide, physical assaults, and sexual assaults compared to offenses such as burglary and robbery. In this study, the majority of the respondents claimed to have been under the influence/intoxication of substance(s) such as alcohol during the commission of murder (Felson and Staff, 2010). Table 1 also reports percentages of women who reported to have ever-experienced intimate partner sexual violence from pooled data, combining the three cycles of the ZDHS. For all years combined, the results show that a higher percentage of women with no education and primary education reported to have experienced sexual violence compared to women with women with secondary education and above. The same applies to women in the highest wealth index who reported lower proportions of sexual violence compared to the women in the lower wealth index.

In this study, we analyzed the distribution and trends of DALYs caused by AUD, DUD, interpersonal violence, and self-harm among different regions from 1990 to 2021. The National Firearms Commerce and Trafficking Assessment is a comprehensive report on firearms commerce and trafficking. ATF uses these statutes to target, investigate and recommend prosecution of these offenders to reduce the level of violent crime and to enhance public safety. ATF also strives to increase State and local awareness of available Federal prosecution under these statutes. To curb the illegal use of firearms and enforce the Federal firearms laws, ATF issues firearms licenses and conducts firearms licensee qualification and compliance inspections.

Alcohol Use Disorder Prevalence

  • Fortunately, from 1990 to 2021, the incidence, DALYs, and mortality rates of global interpersonal violence and self-harm have shown a downward trend.
  • Among the new cases of AUD, DUD, and interpersonal violence, and self-harm, the proportions of males were 78%, 54.67%, 75.82%, 40.33%, respectively.
  • Intervention policies targeting AUD and DUD may help reduce the occurrence of interpersonal violence and self-harm.
  • The institution did not have any role in the study design, data collection, analysis, or interpretation nor did they have a role in manuscript writing, or the decision to submit this paper for publication.

In terms of DALYs, the proportion of males were 80.91%, 62.05%, 77.48%, 68.65%, respectively, while for deaths, the proportion of males were 85.32%, 71.26%, 82.31%, 69.54%, respectively. We found that the incidence of self-harm was higher among females, while the disability and mortality rates were lower compared to males, indicating that self-harm is more severe among males, consistent with previous findings 24. Across age groups, the burden of DUD, interpersonal violence, and self-harm was highest among the 15–49 age group and tend to decreased with increasing age. The burden of AUD was highest among the 50–74 age group, followed by the 15–49 age group, and the APC trends in DALYs rates these two age groups from 1990 to 2021 were similar.

Finally, we tested whether alcohol’s effects on empathy varied across participants with differing levels of trait empathy, as those with lower trait empathy might be more susceptible to alcohol-induced changes in empathy according to both theoretical models40 and empirical findings17. On the other hand, belonging to the highest wealth quintile and residing in rural areas provide protections against intimate partner sexual violence. Alcohol intoxication can lead to both positive and negative social outcomes, and there has been much interest in investigating the underlying mechanisms that may produce such varied social effects (e.g.,3,15,16). Recent research suggests that alcohol-induced changes in social cognition, namely emotion recognition and empathy, could play a role in these desirable and undesirable social consequences (e.g.,17,20,21).

Sexual violence has wide-ranging repercussions for its victims, manifesting in several social and health problems. These include but not limited to depression, chronic pain, homelessness, unwanted pregnancies, substance abuse, suicidal tendencies, unsafe abortions, and pregnancy complications 4,5. Sexual violence can also contribute to socioeconomic disparities as victims may endure social and economic burdens such a lost income, personal insecurity and productivity 7. In addition to alcohol’s effects on emotion recognition, we also examined alcohol-induced changes in empathy. Empathy plays a crucial role in how individuals relate to and connect with others, influencing the quality of their relationships and interactions49,50, and thus alcohol’s impact on empathy could have downstream implications on social behaviors. Violent Crime and Sexual Offences – Alcohol-Related Violence

However, this significant relationship does not hold in the subsequent cycles of the ZDHS. Wealth status shows an interesting picture whereby wealth index does not influence sexual violence significantly prior to 2018. In 2018, there are significantly lower odds of experiencing sexual violence for women in higher wealth quintile compared to those in the first. For example, women in the highest quintile have alcohol and violence statistics 0.55 times lower odds of experiencing intimate partner sexual violence compared to those in the first quintile. A higher proportion of women who live with men who consume alcohol reported to have experienced sexual violence (21%) compared to those who don’t live with such men (11.8%).

Acute alcohol intake reduces tryptophan availability to the brain (non-aggressive), which leads to a decrease in serotonin synthesis and turnover, about 25% of the concentration of tryptophan following an oral intake of alcohol (Badawy et al., 1995). Hence, it is probable that in the aggressive brain, the drop in brain serotonin synthesis might even be greater (40–60%) during moderate intake of alcohol (Badawy, 2003). However, the inconsistent findings of serotonin markers in brain imaging studies of alcoholics suggest that comorbidity of AUD with other psychiatric disorders may complicate the serotonin hypothesis in real life. In addition, even individual differences in personality traits determine the types of emotion affected by the depletion of serotonin (Kanen et al., 2021). In 2011, 73 and 57% of the homicides recorded in the United States and Russia were alcohol related (Landberg and Norström, 2011), whereas, in countries including Finland, Netherlands, and Sweden, alcohol consumption led to lethal violent crimes reported from 2003 to 2006.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 14.5 million (nearly 15 million) people ages 12 and older met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria for past-year alcohol use disorder (AUD). The proportion of victims in violent incidents who either sustained physical injury or received medical attention were similar regardless of whether the incident was alcohol-related, however, victims in alcohol-related incidents tended to experience more severe injuries. Similar proportions of alcohol-related (47%) and non-alcohol-related (45%) violent incidents came to the attention of the police (Appendix Table 5.08 (1.42 Mb Excel sheet)). The alcohol-related violent incidents that occurred in or around a ‘pub or club’ can be broken down further. Just over half of these incidents occurred within a licensed premise (30% ‘inside a nightclub’, 25% inside a ‘pub, bar or working men’s club’), while the remaining incidents occurred in locations outside but near the premises (Figure 5.9).

Moreover, given the timeliness of the data, the GBD 2021 data may not fully reflect the most current situation 62. The projections for disease burden up to 2040 are based on trends and assumptions from GBD 2021, and future economic crises, policy changes, and environmental factors (e.g., climate change) may significantly impact the accuracy of these predictions. Therefore, the projected results should be interpreted with caution and dynamically adjusted in light of future real-world data. From 1990 to 2021, the incidence rate among males has consistently been much higher than that among females. Globally in 2021, the incidence rate among males was approximately 3.53 times that of females.

In addition to aiding the enforcement of Federal requirements for gun purchases, compliance inspections of existing licensees focus on assisting law enforcement to identify and apprehend criminals who illegally purchase firearms. ATF recognizes the role that firearms play in violent crimes and pursues an integrated regulatory and enforcement strategy. Investigative priorities focus on armed violent offenders and career criminals, narcotics traffickers, narco-terrorists, violent gangs, and domestic and international arms traffickers. Sections 924(c) and (e) of Title 18 of the United States Code provide mandatory and enhanced sentencing guidelines for armed career criminals and narcotics traffickers as well as other dangerous armed criminals. Alcohol abuse statistics show that approximately 92% of U.S. adults who drink excessively report binge drinking in the past 30 days.

In summary, people consume alcohol for the pleasure it brings them, but alcohol also brings problems for drinkers and for society generally. The papers in this issue examine both the extent that alcohol is linked to the problem of violence as well as the factors that can modify this link, including preventive interventions aimed at reducing alcohol-related violence. Similar research examining the relationship between per-capita consumption and self-inflicted violence (i.e., suicide) has produced mixed results 10–13. In their paper, Kerr et al. 14 argue that previous research has focused on the acute role of intoxication, failing to consider the potential long-term effects of alcohol consumption on suicide (via depression). Their confirm the positive link between population drinking and suicide rates in the U.S. and further show that the majority of the effect is mediated by the chronic effects of long-term alcohol consumption. Thus, their analyses identify a major gap in previous aggregate attempts to tackle this question.

Data from 2006 to 2018 indicate that both the men and women increasingly binge drink; in women, the largest increase was found in the age group 30–44 years without children (Sarah and Keyes, 2019). In an effort to address violence against women, Zambia made sexual violence as part of the Zambian Penal Code in 1995 14 and later in 2011, the country enacted the anti-gender-based violence act (AGVA) 15. The penal code is focal tool applied by courts against sexual violence perpetrators and prescribes punishment for sexual offences to the maximum terms of life imprisonment to act as a deterrent. The AGVA provided, among other things, a legal framework for the establishment of victim shelters across the country. It is within this framework that the government, together with partner organizations, has operated the ‘One-stop Center’ (OSC) model to provide key services to victims of sexual and gender-based violence. The OSC model is an integrated strategy where key agencies such as the police, health, social workers, and other agencies are brought in one location to provide both legal and social support to victims 16.

Contrary to this, a cross-sectional analysis of data from 83 countries that controlled for several possible covariates reported that countries with riskier drinking patterns did not have higher homicide rates compared to countries with less risky drinking patterns. In addition, there is considerable conceptual overlap between emotion recognition and cognitive empathy, which both involve perceiving and understanding another person’s emotional state. While some researchers consider these to be independent constructs (e.g.,82), others view emotion recognition as a lower-level process that supports empathy (e.g.,41,69).

The MET effectively measures emotion recognition and labels it as cognitive empathy, further blurring the distinction between these constructs83,84. Future research should aim to develop and use distinct measures that separately assess emotion recognition and cognitive empathy. This approach could elucidate whether alcohol intoxication primarily affects the foundational perceptual processes and/or the more complex empathic responses involved in social interactions. Multi-participant alcohol administration studies that permit real-time social interactions may be particularly helpful to disentangle emotion recognition from cognitive empathy.
